Abbott Public Library, Sunapee, New Hampshire

A trip through New Hampshire on the way to Montreal included time for a quick visit to the Abbott Library in Sunapee.

It was New Year’s Eve eve, so the library was pretty quiet. Quiet, yes, but certainly not empty. During our visit there were many people using the library and a steady flow of patrons in and out. It was, overall, a positive experience and we’ll highlight some of the plusses below.

The only thing that was disappointing was that no member of the staff acknowledged us or even seemed to be aware of our presence. This is a big bugaboo of ours. It used to be reflected in our “friendliness” score. Even though we no longer do ratings, it’s hard not to note.

That aside, here are some of the fun things we saw. Because of the date, the library was still in holiday mode. If I remember correctly, they were in the process of putting away the Christmas decorations while we were there. Hanukkah and Kwanza, however, were both still on display. It was nice to see them represented.

Loved seeing the crank stacks. It is an efficient - if dangerous - way to maximize space. In this case, they were free-standing on the floor.

Really liked seeing a fireplace. We see them more and more - and frequently they work, either with gas or electricity. Not sure we’ve seen a wood fire in our travels, which is probably a good thing.

Beehive-like cells in Children’s. We’ve seen these before at the Advanced Learning Library in Whicita. Liked’em then, liked’em in this case as well.

Always like to see puzzle exchanges. We’ve seen formal(ish) ones, but mostly they’re like what we saw here in Sunapee and they’re just perfect.

Of course, New Hampshire being New Hampshire, there was dedicated motorcycle parking!

All-in-all, a brief but satisfying visit to a lovely little library.
