Leroy Pollard Public Library, New Braintree, Massachusetts
On a tour of Central Massachusetts public libraries, we had the opportunity to visit the delightful little Leroy Pollard Public Library in New Braintree, Massachusetts. Located only 75 miles from regular, ol’ Braintree, New Braintree is home to just shy of 1,000 people. It is also the home of the Massachusetts State Police Academy.
We were fortunate to be able to visit, for as is the case with so many libraries in Central and Western Mass, the hours are limited (just 12.5 per week). We were also lucky enough to spend some time with Therese Goulet, the library’s director. She let us know the library was built in 1987, thanks to the generosity of Leland and Helen Pollard.
Despite its age, the library appears to be in tip-top condition. This might be due to relatively light visitation (12 patrons would be a busy day at this library). We’d prefer to think that it’s thanks to the TLC provided by Therese and the town.
The interior is open and welcoming, with a nice vaulted ceiling. The collection is small, naturally, but is expanded through Interlibrary Loan. Beyond the adult section is the library’s large children’s room. It is well-appointed with nice furniture, activities, and displays. The views from all of the library spaces are bucolic.
During our visit, we noted two items of interest. One was a quilt, which is something we seem to see at most libraries. The other was less common: a stuffed fishercat. As it happens, it was actually the second we’d seen that day, the other in Ware!
This was a quiet little library serving a quiet little community in the middle of the state. It was a pleasant visit, and we recommend stopping by!
