Falmouth Memorial Library, Falmouth, Maine

Driving up to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine, was a real treat, especially for the holiday lights they had on display. Taking this road trip meant, of course, stopping at a library! That library ended up being the Falmouth Memorial Library in Falmouth, Maine. This building was originally built in 1952, but later received a stunning renovation. After the renovations were completed in the fall of 2020, patrons were able to see that not only was it an updated design, but it doubled in size!

The modern feel was evident as we walked into the lobby. The light fixtures, the color scheme, and the furniture brought the library into the modern age. What truly struck us was the incredible amount of art hanging on the walls. We learned that the library was hosting an exhibit titled the Great Illustration of Maine. All the pieces were done by artists from Maine. We were impressed by all the library had to offer, but this exhibit blew us away.

As we walked around, we saw it was a one-floor library. The children’s and the teens' spaces were to the right of the main door. To the left, we saw the main desk and all the materials designated for adults. The collection seemed robust, and there was a considerable number of work spaces available for patrons.

As we wrapped up our visit, we were able to take a moment and speak to the assistant director, Kate. She was able to give us a snapshot of what it was like at this library. We learned that the programming was popular! And during the week, the work spaces are filled with remote workers. We do have to say it was pretty busy on the Saturday we visited. We noticed that the parking lot was full.

We thanked Kate for her time and made our way out the door. Our visit to the Falmouth Memorial Library was a memorable stop on an already special trip. Between the thoughtfully designed space, the impressive art exhibit, and the welcoming atmosphere we encountered, it was clear that the library functioned as an essential gathering place for the community.
